Cherchera Festival

The Cherchera Festival (also known as Chherchera Tihar) is a major post-harvest folk festival celebrated across Chhattisgarh, including Korba, to mark the joy of a successful crop season. It traditionally falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Paush (January). Households donate freshly harvested paddy (rice) and green vegetables to the visitors. Madai Festival

In Chhattisgarh, the Madai Festival is a grand tribal celebration primarily observed between December and March. While it is most famous in regions like Bastar and Kanker, it is a “travelling” festival that moves through various districts as different communities host their unique versions. While Korba is a major district in Chhattisgarh, the Madai Festival is most traditionally associated with the Gond tribe in the southern regions (Bastar, Kanker, Narayanpur). Local “Madai Melas” (fairs) may occur in Korba’s tribal pockets following the harvest, but they are typically smaller, community-led events whose dates are decided by village priests.
